Collaboration as the enemy of the unknown

No change ever happens in isolation

When we introduce a new system, process, behaviour or widget in business we must always do so in the knowledge that we must manage the change in the interfacing or neighbouring systems and processes. So often Change Management is considered at the end of a project or beyond the design phase but in doing so we miss some key opportunities.

Regularly in my role as a consultant I draw up jigsaw pieces on a page whilst describing to my client the human instinct to focus on what is missing or erroneous in any system/process/model, and seek to model the replacement focusing on strengthening the weakness, what usually is then missed are the elements that work so well that we take them for granted.

The jigsaw looks something like this;

Engage your change expert in design

Having a Change Manager to map the stakeholder groups, engage them in design activity and plan out the benefit delivery in advance, therefore, is a strong indication of change which delivers as expected against the investment and benefit commitment. If these experiences sound familiar to you perhaps it is time to;

  • Consider how early you engage change management professionals in your changes
  • Assess the Change Readiness of your business and how you can improve that
  • Look at your design process for your systems and processes and how you can gain greater engagement.

For advice on your next change initiative come and talk to us at P2 Consulting about how we can deliver for you.
