Mobile application for a major UK insurance company

The Challenge
  • Our client was developing a “safe driver” application to run on both IOS and Android devices. Its competitors had already begun creating their own versions of this application and our client was keen to be first to market. “Safe driver” applications use GPS technology on mobile devices to assess customers’ driving ability. “Good” (safe) drivers are rewarded with lower premiums and “bad” drivers don’t qualify for a discount on their premiums
  • This was the client’s first attempt at creating a mobile application – they lacked the necessary processes and infrastructure for mobile projects and the team did not have the required technical abilityAnother challenge was that this was an Agile project and many of the client’s team members were learning Agile processes on the job, rather than being trained upfront. 
The Solution
  • P2 Consulting was selected due to its strengths in Agile test strategy, functional testing and its in-depth knowledge of the UK mobile market. P2 Consulting developed an Agile test strategy, which aided the client in developing the application for different operating systems and enabled the test labs to conduct testing on different mobile phone models. To ensure the application worked, a set of functional test cases were created, which can be updated when improvements and features are added to the application
  • Performance analysis of the application was a high priority for the client. In response, P2 Consulting developed a benchmarking framework allowing the client to confirm the accuracy of the GPS. This was utilized to approve various driving manoeuvres, the evaluation of which would provide the “score” for the standard of driving
  • P2 Consulting made further amendments to the benchmarking framework. This included operational variations of the different handsets and their operating systems, to ensure consistency in the scoring algorithm.
